idpa
The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) was founded in 1996 by Bill Wilson (founder, Wilson Combat) and a group of industry peers who felt that competitive shooting had drifted away from its martial roots. They wanted to craft a shooting sport that emphasized practical self-defense skills.
Unique to the sport, competitors are required to wear concealment garments and utilize cover during courses of fire. Since its inception in Berryville, Arkansas, IDPA has grown into a massive global organization with members across more than 50 countries. It remains one of the most popular formats for shooters to test their proficiency with the actual equipment they carry in real life.
idpa’s principles
TIME PLUS SCORING
IDPA’s scoring system champions accuracy by assigning time penalties for anything other than perfect shots. Your final score for a stage becomes your “raw” time, plus any time penalties from marksmanship or procedural mistakes
COVER AND CONCEALMEANT
IDPA attempts to replicate real-world self defense skills by requiring that shooters compete from concealment, use cover when appropriate, and engage targets in “tactical priority”
PRACTICAL EQUIPMENT
To ensure that guns and gear are practical and not too “racey”, IDPA uses weight and size limits to ensure that most shooters are using practical equipment for self defense.
